The "Recitative and Prayer" is the Second Movement of the Grand Symphony for Band (Funeral and Triumphal), Opus 15, of Hector Berlioz, first performe"d in Paris on July 28, 1840. Berlioz scored this movement for trombone solo, accompanied by band, and the work is thus one of the very few important solos written for the instrument by one of the great masters. The piano reduction, by Roger Smith, is a faithful arrangement of the band score.
